Ely, founded as a silver-mining town in 1868, became the County Seat for White Pine County after a terrible fire in Hamilton (the original county seat).
Hamilton is a ghost town now along with many others in White Pine County.
White Pine County was created in 1869. It is the birthplace of Former First Lady Patricia Nixon. White Pine County has plenty of wide open space, ranches
in the valleys and mountain peaks to be very proud of.
Ely offers a variety of services and history abounds, including some of the most beautiful murals in the world. It has it's own post office,
grocery stores, variety store, flower shops, espresso shops, hardware stores, lumber yard, bars, hotel & motels, and craft stores. It also has a wonderful
hospital and clinic, a public library, senior center, museums, art gallery, parks and of course the Nevada Northern Railroad and it's Ghost Trains.
This railroad is a true wonder! It is the best preserved railroad in the State of Nevada. It will soon become a working railroad as well as already being a
wonderful tourist attraction. At the Nevada Northern Railway Museum you can take authentic steam train rides on the Ghost Train of Ely.
Wheeler Peak in the Great Basin National Park has alpine lakes, glaciers and the beautiful Lehman Caves. All located in White Pine County!
Cave Lake and the Ward Charcoal Ovens are also located in White Pine County. These parks are now Nevada State Parks. Comins Lake is managed
by the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
McGill, 13 miles to the North on US Highway 93, is a very nice community as well. It has it's own elementary school (which has had top honors), four churches,
a post office, grocery store, gas staion/convenience store, beauty shop, bar, and the only antique store and public swimming pool in the County. It also is
home to the McGill Historical Drug Store Museum which was donated by the Culbert family. McGill is the original mining town and was owned by Nevada
Consolidated Copper and then Kennecott Copper Corporation. There are still some of the original buildings left from the copper smelting days. The town
was sold to the people in about 1959-1960.
Ruth, 7 miles to the West on US Highway 50 (the Loneliest Highway in America), sits on the edge of the old copper dumps. The town has been moved from its
original location because of the mining. The mine has reopened again under the new ownership of Quadra Mining Company and is now called the Nevada Robinson Mining
Company. This Company employs approximately 400 people. Ruth has it's own post office, two bars, a community center, and more.
Lund and Preston, approximately 35 miles South of Ely on State Highway 318, are still strong farming and raching communities. Lund has the newest school in White
Pine County. It handles all twelve grades. Lund also has its own post office, museum, curio shops, convenience store and more.
Baker, approximately 65 miles East on US Highways 50 & 6, sits at the gate to the Great Basin National Park. It is just inside the border of Nevada if you are headed
toward Utah. It has it's own post office, convenience store, motel, restaurant, community center and more.
Cherry Creek, approximately 60 miles North of Ely on US Highway 93, also has its own post office as well as lots of history in its museum. There are four cemeteries
in Cherry Creek.
